In this video we see Topdressing, this is something that is carried out regularly by many professional green keepers who apply a thin layer of graded sand or finely graded soil to the top of the grass and work it in towards the roots. The main purpose of this is to create a smooth level attractive surface, it can also help to control thatch, weeds and, many diseases.
Topdressing a lawn is the perfect way to smooth out the surface without going to the trouble of lifting it or returfing. A lumpy lawn will lead to problems when mowing, the high points are more likely to be scalped by the mower and this will open up the sward to let in weeds and diseases. In contrast, the dips become obvious when the grass within them is left slightly longer than the rest of the lawn and there will be a noticeable difference in colour.
